| Our first book! John le Carre's Our Kind of Traitor, a stand-alone spy novel set in this unstable post-Cold War world. A couple of reviews so you can see what we're getting into. First, from the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/24/books/review/Cain-t.html The Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/10/10/AR2010101003158.html (Why those two? Because those are the papers I read every day.) The general consensus seems to be...pretty damned good. Maybe it's no Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but still entertaining and thought-provoking. For our purposes, it also has the advantage of not being a prequel, or sequel, or part of a series, or anything like that. As this was published in 2010 (I didn't realize it was so long ago!), was generally well-reviewed, and is by a popular author, it should be available at most libraries. Used copies start at $3.48, including shipping, at abe.com; Amazon and Barnes and Noble sell it in a variety of formats, including audio and e-book versions, in a confusing array of prices. ETA: I'm setting the deadline for completing the book and starting the discussion at January 1, which started out nice and symbolic but by the time I got everything up and running, met the one-month criterion we decided on. HOWEVER! if you finish the book earlier, you may want to post a note to that effect, and if everybody who's signed up for the discussion gets finished early, we can go ahead and get going with the discussion. | |
